On This Day in Essex

ON THIS DAY in Essex follows on from the Essex Hundred and the Essex Hundred Histories. It builds a comprehensive day by day record of events in the county's history.

Essex is where the unique limited edition aircraft, the 'Carvair', was created and where a 'secret' nuclear bunker is open to the public. Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's first job was in Essex and Winston Churchill ended his Parliamentary career representing an Essex constituency.

Much earlier Elizabeth I came to Tilbury to make a rousing speech and later the writer Daniel Defoe ran a brick factory there. Essex was the birthplace of broadcasting. It was in the waters just off of the Essex coast where 'pirate' radio began; and following a shooting and death on the other side of the county 'pirate' radio's demise was sealed.

Most intriguingly of all, many people believe that 'William Shakespeare' was only a pen name for an Essex man.

Full of fascinating facts, ON THIS DAY in Essex is an absolute must for every bookshelf.
