THE ESSEX HUNDRED

History Poetry

Daniel Defoe, the great English Novelist, in his book, A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain, wrote,

"I set out, the 3rd of April 1722, passing Bow-Bridge where the county of Essex begins".

Essex is one of our oldest counties and derived its name from the sixth century Kingdom of the East Saxons. It is naturally bounded by rivers, the Thames to the south, the Lea to the west and the Stour to the north. To the east is the North Sea formerly called the German Ocean.

From the Romans - to Nuclear power and the Space Shuttle. How and why Essex has played such a pivotal role in the development of British History? Some interesting facts and unusual events make up the counties remarkable history.

Two titles of The Essex Hundred are now on sale.
