Description
Bygone Dagenham and Rainham
By Brian Evans
Dagenham and Rainham were riverside communities for hundreds of years where preventing flooding was a priority and the marshlands were malarial hotspots. Despite the best efforts to maintain seawalls, they were regularly swept away during Thames tidal surges and the resultant damage to livelihoods was enormous. Taming the river was ongoing challenge and it wasn’t until the 19th century that the river was brought under control and construction of Dagenham Dock began.
The early 20th century saw the rapid establishment of industry and the arrival of the giant Ford motor works together with building of the Becontree Housing estate.
The author Brian Evans puts together a very readable narrative that is well researched and supported by over 180 period images and maps.
