The Romans called the place Caesaromagus. For a week in 1381 Chelmsford became the seat of Government for the whole of England to deal with the aftermath of the peasants’ revolt. With the coming, first of the canal from Heybridge, and then the railways Chelmsford soon became a hub of industry and innovation. With the arrival of Marconi, Chelmsford  became the birth place of radio.
