Description
Bygone East Ham
By Brian Evans
In the 14th century East Ham had 18 houses and 43 inhabitants. During the next five centuries little changed. It was where farmers living in scattered houses grew crops for ‘distant’ London on bird haunted marshes criss-crossed by ditches in wilderness that was the Thames flood plain.
Then from the 1850s came a phenomenal change. The railways arrived. Britain’s growing industries needed a place to serve the capital and East Ham had plenty of low cost land that was ideal. The new factories in turn bought a housing boom and the population surged.
This is story of the rise of East Ham that gained county borough status by 1914. Bygone East Ham is graphically illustrated with over 150 maps, period advertisements, and of course people and places.
