From Tilbury
to Tyneside
Eastern Region Railway
Shipping Publicised
by Robert N. Forsythe
The “Eastern Region” was formed in 1948, inheriting the London and North Eastern Railways widespread shipping interests. In geographical terms the Eastern Region covered the ports along the east coast from Tilbury to Tyneside. In business terms, as part of British Railways, it was connected with railway- owned shipping at Tilbury, Harwich and in the Humber.
Robert Forsythe the author of, From Tilbury to Tyneside gives a fascinating analysis of the Eastern Region Railway shipping services as seen through their publicity. The book gives a flavour of travelling by railway ferry from the early twentieth century to the present day.
