Description
Leigh-on-Sea
A History
By Judith Williams
In 1565 Leigh-on-Sea was described as a ‘very proper town, well furnished with good mariners where commonly tall ships do ride’. During its heyday Leigh had close associations with the Royal Navy. Following the decline of ship building Leigh became known for the Oysters and smuggling. The surviving old inns and cockle sheds today are a tourist attraction in the ‘Old Town’ but there is so much more to Leigh-on-Sea where farmsteads, woodlands and urban development are all part the town’s rich history.
