Description
SOUTH BENFLEET
A History
By Robert Hallmann
Benfleet first entered the history books as the site of the Battle of Benfleet of AD 893, a decisive battle in the ongoing Saxon / Viking wars that ravaged England. However, there is much more.
Throughout its history Benfleet has been home to a fascinating array of people from the first Saxon settlers and the Vikings to individuals such as the rector who left a legacy of music and put the town’s name on his baroque compositions. For much of its early history one of the town’s manors was held by the church whilst the other was held by the king. The author late Robert Hallman’s book is an engaging read and has well over 100 black and white photographic images, maps, illustrations and period advertisements.
