The Struggle to Build Southend’s First Pier
By Marion Pearce
Southend Pier has stood for nearly 200 years. At one and a quarter mile long, it is reputed to be the longest pier in the world.
Yet getting the pier built in the first place was no easy matter. Apart from the financial and engineering challenges needed to be overcome, The Struggle to Build Southend’s First Pier was from the very outset mired in argument. Powerful landowners had different views as to where the pier should be built and who should pay for it. Some who considered themselves part of the ‘fashionable’ society and held property in Southend opposed the pier fearing the disturbance that more visitors would bring.
Fishermen and oystermen were also alarmed that their livelihoods would be irreparably damaged. On and off for 10 years there were multiple legal disputes. A petition was raised and sent to parliament opposing continuing work on the pier and all set against a background of vandalism and violence where local magistrates refused to enforce the law.
So step back in time and enjoy the remarkable story. Based on a wealth of material taken from contemporary newspaper and court reports together with extracts of the minutes of key meetings and years research by the author The Struggle for to build Southend’s First Pier comes to life.
