THAMES SAILING BARGES AT LEIGH
By Ann V Price
The third edition
At one time at least 70 barges sailed from Leigh-on-Sea. Although in many cases the owner of these barges failed to keep detailed records and logs, Anne Price has uncovered fascinating details on many of the barges from a variety of sources whether in Leigh itself, contemporary newspaper reports, local suppliers and even uncatalogued manuscripts gathering dust found in local libraries.
The result is an in depth study of these once HGVs of the seas beginning in the 19th century.
Included are details of the owners, cargoes, upkeep and repairs of the vessels and information on the crews, wives and accommodation on board.
THAMES SAILING BARGES AT LEIGH also has an detailed appendix of the names of barges, their owners, dates of when and where they were built and when they were sold off or taken off register.
The book contains over 20 black and white period illustrations and maps.
